Frutiger delivers a bespoke wheel washing solution for Tarmac's Sunnymead Quarry in Wivenhoe, Essex.

Through its long-standing relationship with Frutiger, Tarmac has purchased almost 50 wheel washing systems for sites across the UK. This proven experience was a key factor in selecting Frutiger to supply another system for Sunnymead Quarry.
The Brief
Tarmac required a robust wheel washing solution capable of accommodating a variety of heavy goods vehicles operating at Sunnymead Quarry, including tippers, low loaders and articulated lorries. The installation also needed an effective water recovery and recycling system to minimise freshwater consumption and support the site's operational requirements.
Our Solution
Frutiger supplied and installed a bespoke 6-metre inset wheel washing system, designed to accommodate the different types of vehicles using the quarry. The installation involved preparing new concrete foundations to house the inset system, alongside a purpose-built concrete wedge pit to collect wash water.
A large, above-ground 50,000-litre recycling tank was also installed, allowing recovered water to be pumped from the wedge pit and reused within the washing process. Together, these components provide an efficient wheel washing solution capable of recovering and recycling almost all of the wash water.
The Result
The completed installation provides Tarmac with a durable wheel washing system suited to the demands of a busy quarry environment. By recovering and recycling almost all of the wash water, the system helps reduce freshwater consumption while providing an effective cleaning solution for vehicles leaving the site. The project further strengthens the long-standing relationship between Tarmac and Frutiger, while providing a valuable reference site for prospective customers in the surrounding region.
